Tom Smith

Lots of depraved weekends spent at the Summerow Lake Montonia cabin with Tom, Lewis Ware, Leighton Temple, and Mel Melton. Canned goods in the pantry dating back to the Revolution, many with labels long since decomposed, so that for starving teenage boys, opening a can for food was always an adventure. Going "fishing" in the lake with M-80s, much to the dismay of the caretaker.

My favorite quote came at Leighton's house. Leighton's sister, Debbie, was a gorgeous, but spirited young lady a couple of years older than we. One day we were all hanging around in the den (hoping for a dinner invitation from Mrs. Temple, who was an extraordinary cook), when Mrs. Temple came in and angrily said, "I'm gonna kill that Debbie!" To which Tom quipped, "Can I have the body?"

Tom was a strange and wonderful wit, and I'm sorry I didnt keep in touch. So sad to know he's gone. Godspeed my friend.

Never went to his place on the lake. But Tommy offered it to me, told me to bring the girl I was dating at the time, said that she and I would have the place to ourselves. Never took him up on the offer, at 17 I think it was a little too "fast" for me. But I liked Tommy, we were pretty good pals. He was a gentle, smart, funny guy with a dry wit.
